Battle at Jukmiryeong

6 Hours 15 Minutes of Battle at Jukmiryeong

On 5 July 1950, the first battle between UN forces and North Korean troops took place at Jukmiryeong, Osan. Having arrived at the hill at 3am, Task Force Smith deployed its company B on the left side of the road and its company C on the right, and its 105mm artillery battery at Sucheong-ri at the rear of the hill.

At 7am, NKA tanks were sighted near Suwon, and the engagement started at 08:16. Task Force Smith had a fierce fight on its hands despite the clear disparity in forces. As its retreat route was blocked by the North Koreans and as the defense lines were broken down rapidly Task Force Smith finally decided to retreat at 14:30.

During the battle, 181 [150 infantrymen and 31 artillerymen] out of 540 Task Force Smith's soldiers were either killed in action or missing. Approximately 127 of the 5,000 North Korean soldiers were also killed or missing.

The first battle at Jukmiryeong sent a message that UN Forces were now permanently involved in the war, regardless of the outcome of this particular battle. Further. the dispatch of UN Forces to the Korean War is historically significant as the UN took collective action to defen reedom and peace under the UN flag based on its k ideals for the first time since its foundation.
